One Billion Seconds…
Filed under: Random Bits;No CommentsONE Billion Seconds ~
31.688087814028950237026896848937 Years = 1 Billion Seconds
The Math:
60 Seconds * 60 Minutes * 24 Hours * 365.25 Days = 31,557,600 Seconds in 1 Year (365.25 Days instead of 365 Days in 1 Year, to take into account Leap Years.)
1,000,000,000 Seconds (1 Billion Seconds) / 31,557,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Year) = 31.688087814028950237026896848937 YearsSo What?
The Robert Ilardi “CPU”
will be running for 1 Billion Seconds on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 5:20:40 PM In Other Words…
Robert will be 1 Billion Seconds old on Thursday, August 11, 2011, let’s have a party!Extra Math (And Logic) used to get the exact Day and Time:
Given: There are 31,557,600 Seconds in 1 Year (365.25 Days to account for Leap Year)
Given: 365.25 in 1 year NOT 365 because the earth’s orbit around the sun is not exact to the day, so we have leap year once every 4 years.
To get the number of years in 1 Billion Seconds: 1,000,000,000 Seconds (1 Billion Seconds) / 31,557,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Year) = 31.688087814028950237026896848937 Years
To get the year Robert will be 1 Billion seconds old: Take the whole number of years 31 add that to the year he was born: 1979 + 31 = 2010 but since the number is MORE Than 31 (It is 31.688087814028950237026896848937, you can’t have a decimal year, so you have to add 1) 2010 + 1 = 2011. You would also, need to take into account that I’m born on December 4th, which has been taken into account below to get the Month and Day.
We still need to get the left over days because 1 Billion seconds is NOT 31 years it is 31.688087814028950237026896848937 Years
Forget about decimal math, let’s go with whole numbers… So let’s get rid of the 31 years and deal with what’s left over in SECONDS!
Additional Seconds to 1 Billion, MINUS 31 Years worth of Seconds (or the 0.688087814028950237026896848937 part in seconds):
Seconds in 31 Years: 31 Years * 31,557,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Year) = 978,285,600 Seconds in 31 Years
Minus that from 1 Billion to get the number of seconds left in the 0.688087814028950237026896848937 left over year): 1,000,000,000 Seconds – 978,285,600 Seconds (Seconds in 31 Years) = 21,714,400 Seconds (Seconds in 0.688087814028950237026896848937)
We need to get the Month…
Given Seconds in 1 Day: 60 Seconds * 60 Minutes * 24 Hours = 86,400 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Day)
Easier to deal with in days, so convert 21,714,400 Seconds to Days: 21,714,400 Seconds / 86,400 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Day) = 251.32407407407407407407407407407 Days
Again, let’s only deal with the whole number (and deal with the left over later): 251 Days
Calculating the Month is tricky, because months can be 28 Days, 29 Days, 30 Days, or 31 Days, so we have to minus month to month (Their might be a better way to do this in pure math, but as a programmer, I’ll cheat, and calculate it using a table and a loop or recursive function!
)… 251 Days
-27 Days left in December 2010 (on December 4, 2010 I will be 31 years old)

11 DaysLess than 1 month, so stop, and you reached the Month: August, you also have the day: August 11
Using a Calendar, August 11th, is a Thursday.
If you want to go crazy, we can calculate the exact seconds on August 11th:
We have to do the same thing we did for the remainder year, but for the remainder Days: 251.32407407407407407407407407407 Days
Given Seconds in 1 Day: 60 Seconds * 60 Minutes * 24 Hours = 86,400 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Day)
We already calculated the whole days: 251 days. So convert Days to Seconds: 251 Days * 86,400 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Day) = 21,686,400 Seconds
We know from above that remainder seconds after 31 years is: 21,714,400 Seconds; This includes both the whole part of remaining days and the decimal part. So all we need to do is MINUS the whole number of seconds in remaining days from the total number of seconds in remaining days…
Left over seconds MINUS whole remaining days: 21,714,400 Seconds – 21,686,400 Seconds = 28,000 Seconds
Given: Seconds in 1 Hour: 60 Seconds * 60 Minutes = 3,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Hour)
Get Hours: 28,000 Seconds / 3,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Hour) = 7.7777777777777777777777777777778 Hours
We now have the time of: 7:00 AM. We didn’t calculate the minutes yet, so start from minutes 00 of 7 o’clock… We get 7AM because the Day starts at 12AM (Midnight); so 7 hours after midnight is 7AM!
To get minutes we need to calculate how many minutes is in 0.7777777777777777777777777777778 Hours. Again, to get the exact number of minutes without dealing with the decimal part, let’s MINUS the whole part…
How many Seconds in 7 Hours: 7 Hours * 3,600 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Hour) = 25,200 Seconds
To get remaining minutes in seconds, MINUS how many seconds in 7 hours from the total remaining seconds from above of 28,000: 28,000 Seconds – 25,200 Seconds = 2,800 Seconds
Convert 2,800 Seconds remaining to Minutes remaining: 2,800 Second / 60 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Minute) = 46.666666666666666666666666666667 Minutes
We now have the time of: 7:46 AM.
Lets get this down to the Second!
One last time, we need to remove the WHOLE number of minutes from the decmial part of the remaining minutes…
Given 46 WHOLE minutes remaining: 46 Minutes * 60 Seconds (Seconds in 1 Minutes) = 2760 Seconds
To get the remaining seconds, MINUS how many seconds in 46 minutes from the total remaining seconds from above of 2,800 Seconds: 2,800 Seconds – 2760 Seconds = 40 Seconds
We now have the time of: 7:46 AM and 40 Seconds (or 7:46:40 AM).
Finally, we need to take into account the time Robert was born, add that to the time of 7:46:40AM… We should also take into account Day Light savings… Since December 4, 2010 is Standard Time (NON DST), we will need to add 1 hour more on August 11, 2011 (since August is Day Light Savings Time).
Given: Robert was born at 8:34 AM
7:46:40 AM + 8:34:00 AM = 16:20:40 OR 4:20:40 PM
Adjust for Day Light Savings Time: 4:20:40 PM + 1:00:00 = 5:20:40 PM
DONE! Robert will be 1 Billion Seconds old on: Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 5:20:40 PM
